Listen, finding good images for these posts is not as easy as you might think, OK??! (Stained glass of dubious aesthetic quality with ray-horned Moses putting his hand on the head of a hairy, bearded Joshua, who is kneeling before him. There are neoclassical Greek-style columns on both sides, as was an authentic representation of life in the desert, but at least Joshua is not wearing medieval battle armor, which is a chronic issue in this particular genre of things and I'm sorry, that was my line.)

That's right, the line of succession.

As you may recall from the messy spies incident, Calev and Joshua were the only scouts sent to spy on the Promised Land who weren't frightened off by what they had seen. After that, as midrash tells it, Joshua became Moses' personal aide / assistant / second in command. And it wasn't exactly a part-time gig, either:

....Joshua served Moses...day and night (Numbers Rabbah 12:9)
