Jewish Text 101

great places for getting started
Jewish Text 101
Beginning to learn about Jewish text means dragons, of course. Glorious illuminations from the Kennicott Bible, 1476 − La Coruña (Spain), written by Moisés Ibn Zabara and illustrated by Joseph Ibn Hayyim. (Image of illuminated Hebrew manuscript with battle dragons and other beasties.)

Life is a Sacred Text is for everyone of every background and belief, rooted in Jewish wisdom. So of course there are some on-ramps here for getting oriented to the lenses that get used around here, if you want that sort of thing.

(And even for those of you who were raised Jewish, well–needless to say, Rabbi Ruttenberg herself didn't grow up knowing stuff in the posts below, so if that's you, too, well... hi, welcome to the party, chips are on the table.)

This section talks about things like a textual history of the tradition; how Jews read, from both a macro- and micro- perspective; what the philosophical difference is between all these denominations (it IS more than just fashion sense); how to explore Judaism, whether you're (re)connecting with your roots or investigating conversion; and much more.

You're not alone! In fact, there's someone else you know who probably has been looking for this, isn't there?

some notes on exploring Judaism
Sometimes people tell me they want to explore the possibility of conversion to Judaism, ask what their first steps should be. Some of this advice also work, in my opinion, for Jews who seek to connect, or reconnect with their tradition, since I get asked about that a lot, too.
