Christianity x Judaism

Jesus' context. Then a lot of things that happened after that.
Christianity x Judaism
Literally every artist drawing Jews from Christian stories: "What a quarrelsome, stubborn, horrible people. I will draw them looking as such." Me, looking at such images: "Ha, looks like a lively debate. Bet they hashed out some good stuff. Sure seems like everyone was having fun in the name of Torah." Christ and the Pharisees, Anthony van Dyck Flemish, early 17th century (Sketch of a smiling bearded Jesus waving his hands and a Neanderthal-looking angry pointing guy facing each other, with other figures engaged in animated debate nearby.)

A while back I did a three-part series on Jesus and the Jews– specifically, Jesus' own Jewish context, and my argument for why I think he was (at least in part) teaching and preaching as a Pharisee of the School of Hillel. It takes me three posts to frame the historical thing and then compare what's happening in Christian texts with sources from my own tradition. I ask that if you read this series, that you please do so in order, as intended.

And then, after that, there are a few posts on some hard things. They're not inherently about Christianity (in that every religion has its liberatory threads and its fundamentalisms, hoo boy) but they're places where the Christian conversation intersects with the conversations here, so they made their way to this page.

I bet you probably know someone else(es) who's been looking for all of this, here, together, too. Tell them!
